Ski tracks on the map: track status, conditions and ice
The ski track network on the map, ski conditions from the weather and an ice model for lakes. Tracks come from the Lipas register, where municipalities and ski centres report their trails — the app never claims a track has been groomed.

The track network from the Lipas register
Ski tracks come from the Lipas register, to which municipalities and ski centres report their trails: fitness loops, touring tracks and lit tracks across Finland on the National Land Survey topographic map. The track card gives length, lighting and elevation profile where the register knows them. Grooming data is not comprehensive, so the app never claims a track has been groomed.
Skiing conditions from the weather
Conditions are estimated from Finnish Meteorological Institute weather: temperature, its change from the previous day, fresh snow, wind and sunshine. A calm morning after frost and fresh snow is the best; a frosty night after a thaw makes the track icy. The estimate is a model that helps you pick a time and a wax, not a measurement on the track.
Ice model and the fell centres' tracks
The ice model estimates lake ice thickness from the frost sum and snow cover – a model, not a measurement; currents, straits and springs stay weak all winter. The track networks of Ylläs, Saariselkä, Syöte and Koli are in Lipas and appear in the app like any fitness loop. Save the map area offline before you go; conditions and the ice model are fetched when there is a connection.
Frequently asked questions
Does the app say whether the track was groomed today?
Not comprehensively. Lipas lacks up-to-date grooming data for every track, so the app shows the track and the skiing conditions from the weather.
Can I trust the ice model?
It is an estimate, not a measurement. Currents and straits are weak regardless of the model. Always test the ice yourself.
