Liminganlahti

Northern Europe's most important bird bay: spring migration, watchtowers and vast shore meadows.

Liminganlahti

Spring migration and towers

Liminganlahti's shallow shore meadows and reed beds gather tens of thousands of migrating waterfowl, waders and geese in spring; April–May is the busiest time, and autumn migration runs from August to October. Several bird towers surround the bay, the one at the Virkkula nature centre being the best known. In Eräkaveri the towers appear from OpenStreetMap, and recent sightings from GBIF show what has been seen from which tower.

Boardwalks and shore trails

Boardwalk trails lead from the nature centre to the meadows and towers; they are short and flat but wet in spring. Trail weather shows wind and rain – a calm morning is best for both the birds and the binoculars.

What the app does not do

Eräkaveri does not identify birds and does not show protected nest sites. The bay has protected areas with spring access restrictions; they are respected by using the marked trails and towers.
